Tips for Maintaining Upholstered Contract Furniture

24th September 2020 By Fabian

For style, comfort and luxury, upholstered furniture in commercial settings is great to provide an ambience and real allure to your venue.  Yet dirty, marked or shabby furniture can be a real put off for customers. And in a busy environment where food is served, the state of the furniture can have a negative impression on the cleanliness of the venue.

Our upholstered furniture will last many years if it is properly cared for. The quality fabric used on our furniture is designed for busy and constant use of commercial venues. So, what is the best way to keep upholstered furniture looking spick and span? Here are a few of our tips:

After Delivery

Due to the wrapping and packaging used during transportation some upholstered items can look squashed and the upholstery can look ‘saggy’. This is often because the foam is cold. Once unwrapped, and placed in a warm environment the foam will regain its original shape ensuring your furniture looks its best.

Placing the Furniture

Never drag, pull or push furniture as resistance from flooring can weaken the legs. Lift them evenly to minimise damage to the furniture.  It is best to place upholstered furniture out of direct sunlight or in-front of radiators, as this may discolour your furniture and damage the upholstery fabric. Airborne pollutants such as fumes from cooking or smoke can also harm your fabric overtime. While it is not always easy to avoid that from happening, proper ventilation can help. It can also help with odour control, as upholstered furniture can easily absorb odours.

Regular Cleaning

Vacuum upholstered furniture regularly for to prevent the build up of dust and to remove surface soil. This also prevents dirt from becoming embedded into the fabric fibres. To clean your furniture use a damp microfibre cloth. Regular cleaning will keep the upholstering looking like new for many years.

Removing Stains

In any environment where food and drink are being served there is the certainty that an accident is going to happen sooner or later.  Do not use bleach spray or other abrasive cleaners on upholstered furniture after spills. A warm, damp cloth will suffice for 99% of stains and marks.  To remove stains, do not rub. Use a soft sponge and dab the stain and then blot dry.

Leather Furniture

Where possible we recommend that you do not place leather furniture in direct sunlight or close to heat sources such as radiators or wood-burning stoves.  Regularly vacuum your leather furniture with a soft brush, and avoid using detergents and sharp implements.
